We sometimes forget to have fun, in life. We forget that not everything we do is for the sake of achievement, and that even when we do achieve something, it doesn’t have to be a result of suffering. It’s okay to have fun.
I’ve been prioritizing joy this year. And that in itself is enough. But guess what? In my pursuit of happiness, I’ve managed to achieve some things after all, more than I ever did while toiling in apathy, trying to do something “important.”
I started taking dance lessons again. I ended up performing in a recital and feeling proud. I started taking singing lessons, and slowly gained more confidence in my voice. There is no endgame, no goal to become a triple-threat Broadway actor. I just wanted to have fun.
I started writing every day, just 1,000 words a day, and I ended up completing the first draft of my novel. Then, I was editing every day, and I created draft two, then draft three, and so on. And I literally enjoyed every minute of it.
Maybe you feel like you haven’t had time to just play since summers between high school. Maybe it’s been even longer, and you can’t remember when you last did something just for the sake of enjoyment. Maybe your whole life’s been about trying to get somewhere. Maybe no one’s ever told you it’s okay to just be here.
So it’s time to get back to doing things you enjoy. Whether it’s creative, active, or lights up your brain in some other way. It’s time to stop making lists and five-year plans and waiting for the right time to get started. It’s time to pick something you love, something you once loved, or something you think you might love, and start doing it. It’s time to take action, and start wasting your time again.
You are more than the trophies on your bookcase. You are still good enough even if no one pats your back and tells you so.
But here—*pats your back*—You’re doing great, kid.
xoxo,
Sasha
